Grand Cavern

The largest of the Gunbridge Bells tunnels. It was actually created in 1896 almost by accident when poor planning allowed 4 newly dug tunnels at water level to intersect unexpectedly. The terminus of these tunnels was made bigger and bigger over successive years until eventually it became a huge subterranean lake with a large harbour.

In the early 20th century the cavern was expanded upwards to encompass the dry level tunnels above. These tunnels now open onto a terrace which spans the circumference of the cavern. This is known as The Grand Terrace and it perches some 20 metres above the lake. The ceiling of the Grand Cavern is about 40 metres high.

Today harbour traffic is mainly water taxis, bringing locals and tourists to the many shops, restaurants and pubs that line the quay. The Grand Terrace also boasts many shops, cafés and even a small hotel.
