Molemen

The Molemen are a special police force, employed by The Steam Guild and deployed only in the tunnel system, where the regular town police have no jurisdiction. The unit’s original name was "The Guild Tunnel Security Force", but the nickname “Molemen”, coined in the pages of The Subterranean in the 1970s, caught on to such an extent that it has since become official.

Molemen are specially equipped to deal with crime in the tunnels. They can be easily identified by their dark grey lightweight uniforms, leather headgear and multi-spectrum goggles. They carry two devices which can be used both as tools and as weapons: an electrical charge pistol (“The Stinger”) and a short billy club-like device known as “The Lance”. The Stinger produces a bolt of concentrated electricity which, if discharged at a person, produces an effect similar to a taser. The Lance extrudes a strand of very strong polymer to a length of up to 20 metres. In the deft hands of a Moleman the device can be used as an aid to climbing, as well as a method for ensnaring animals or people.

Molemen receive a minimum of six months intensive training before being accepted for active duty. They are expert climbers and swimmers, and needless to say, can handle themselves pretty well in a fight, if need be.
