Tunnels
Beneath the town of Gunbridge Bells there is an elaborate system of tunnels (18 miles of them). A large part of G-Bells commerce and social activity takes place here. It is often joked that "only half of the town is above ground, and not the best half"!
The tunnels are mostly manmade, the earliest dating back to the sometime in the 18th century, the most recent dug in April 2009 by the Steam Guild. Some of the tunnels are dry and some of them have varying amounts of water running through them, from a trickle to a full blown river. Boat travel is the most common form of tunnel transportation.
Some tunnels are public, easily accessible and mapped, some are private and owned by businesses and the town council, but the vast majority are obscure, largely disused, unmapped and known only to various fringe elements of the G-Bells populace. The larger main public tunnels are known as "passages", i.e. Calverley Passage, Hyacinth Passage, etc.
