Clutchworthy

In the kitchen, Clutchworthy was deep in conversation with Lenka, the head housekeeper, Gustav, the chef, Tonto, the boot licker and Polly, the mechanic. The conversation, as usual, revolved around the purchase and distribution of illegal materials amongst the Bumbridge estate staff. In this case the material being discussed was Seraphim, a powerful drug manufactured only in the tunnels of Gunbridge Bells.

The four conspirators sucked on their cigarettes nervously as they talked. They weren’t actually nervous in the least, as no one other than staff ever entered the kitchen, but they all liked to effect that posture because it had looked good in Upstairs, Downstairs.

Clutchworthy, of course, considered himself much smarter than the other staff, and at any opportunity, took great pride in swindling them out of their hard earned cash. As he was the contact with the tunnel “Underworld” (this is actually what they call themselves), he could more or less dictate terms and prices. Of course Clutchworthy didn’t actually deal with the Underworld himself, he did it through his musician friend, Maddog. He would need to go see Maddog this afternoon, after picking up his lordship’s forgotten hat from The Institutional Club.
